DJ Mick Flame
What were your first memories of New Wave?

Leather jackets, mohawks and beret hats.

Tell us how you became an XB DJ.

It was kind of an accident. I ran away from home and met George Frederick thru an old girlfriend.
Since I had nowhere to go, I asked if I could stay at the station and volunteer. After seeing what the
station was all about, I decided I wanted to be like the DJs. So with my two gurus of the industry,
-George Frederick and The Morning Man, I eventually turned into a DJ myself.

After XB, I became a vocalist for a band that traveled around Asia. When I had time in between, I
went to some remote radio station and recorded New Wave shows for them.

Tell us something we didn't know about the WXB station.

WXB for me was not just a regular station but a home. Waking up early in the morning with the
Morning Man on board. Then excitedly waiting for Cool Carla to do her shows. Then, I spent the rest
of the day learning how things were done from all of them. I also learned a few things from The
Ghost, Julius Cesar and Ben Hitler. But the one thing that people didn't know about the station was
that it was one big family. Believe it or not, after the station was sequestered, all the volunteers slept
at George Frederick's house for about a month. That's how tight the relationship was with everyone.

If you got marooned in an island, what five records or CDs would you have wished you brought with you?

An album of U2, The Care, The Cure, Madness and China Crisis.

Were you surprised people still held on to the XB spirit after all these years?

Yes I was surprised and am glad that people have never forgotten the station.

What do you think made XB so unique compared to the other stations?

The music, the way the original DJs like The Ghost, Morning Man and Cool Carla did their thing on
the air. Plus the fact the the station was really something different in the 80s, apart from the typical
programming at the time.

What do you think of those people trying to copy us?

How did you guys deal with it back then?

What do you do now besides being an XB DJ?

As I have mentioned, I was a musician for 14 years. I am also a composer of ballad songs. Some of the
jobs I had was in the entertainment field such as choreographer and a drummer. I was also a teacher.
Now I work at a call center as a Sales Verifier.

Do you want to say anything to the XB fans out there?

I am proud to say that whatever I am as a DJ, I owe it to all the other DJs that made the station a
legend. And to all the fans out there, thank you for being there for the station. And to the jocks who
brought you the music that you loved. Thanks to all the fans for listening to the Station that Dares to
be Different.
