The Station that Dares to be Different
Klyde: Hi Cool Carla. Didn't I just interview you a couple of months ago about reuniting XB jocks and
resurrecting XB 102? Well here we are, and after only being on the air for a month, we accumulated
hundreds of hours of Total Listening Hours. Isn't that amazing?
Cool Carla: I know. It is amazing how the power of positive thinking and imagination can create a whole
world of wonder...and how such a small and humble radio station like XB, inspired so many lives.
Anyways, whose baby is the XB Internet?
Klyde: It's a collaboration between me, Michael Sutton and The Sandman.
Cool Carla: I must say, great work guys! You made a lot of people happy (and young again!)
The Sandman: Thanks Carla, If I may add...it's been a fun ride so far...I did not grow up with XB 102,
however I grew up with a lot of college radio and dance radio...C89, KCMU (which is now KEXP) KAOS
and KUPS here in Seattle in the late 80's was a great influence for me.
Klyde: Thanks Carla...you have an amazing voice, have you ever thought of working here in the US as a
DJ?
Cool Carla: Now that you mentioned it, why not! As long as I can take all my dogs with me to the states
:-) I am always open to new career opportunities.
Klyde: Of course you can bring your dogs here, it's a part of the family. We don' have too many cool and
sweet DJs like you here in the states. What kind of dogs do you have? I have an Australian Shepherd. She's
a hyper one.
The Sandman: Talkin' doggie talk! I have a golden retriever-australian shepherd-mixed mutt.
Cool Carla: I have 5 Daschunds and 5 natives (mixed breeds)...yup 10 dogs!!!
Klyde: I saw a copy of your playlist. Wow, it's amazing how you still kept copies of the music that the XB
listeners enjoyed back in the day. Did you accumulate/ collect them over the years, please let us in on that.
Cool Carla: I collect CDs (from New Wave to Rock, from Bossanova to Electronica). so through the
years I was able to unearth a huge library of New Wave songs. I also quit smoking so I can buy more CDs
:-)
Klyde: Good for you! I quit in 2001, which added ten more years to our lives to listen to more New Wave
hehe...Bossanova...Umm...translate. And which Electronica groups do you like?
CC: I like a lot of downtempo, trip-hop, electro-groove electro-bossa and deep house music. Groups/ DJs
like Thievery Corp. Tosca, Deep Dish, Late Night Alumni, Timo Maas, Bossacucanova, Suba, Blue Six,
Ananda Project, Truby Trio Pete Tong, Hotel Costes series, Global Underground series, Naked Music
series, Hed Kendi series, Underworld, Miguel Migs and the list goes on and on.
Klyde: Isn't Electronica an off-shoot of New Order/ Kraftwerk and other Synth bands? What's your take on
that?
CC: Yes it is in more ways than one. There were some important pieneers like Kraftwerk, there were the
dark European electronic music of groups like New Order and Depeche Mode, there was the light
American disco Giorgio Moroder, and there was the Funk of James Brown. Electronica came from these
European and American electronical and rhythmical roots into House, Techno, Breakbeat and Jungle and
many more sub genres of electronica. Kraftwerk, making their first records in the seventies and being 100
% electronic, influenced New Wave and Techno.
Klyde: What do you think of the new bands that are coming out these days, and sounds more like bands
from the 80s, like Interpol who sounds like Joy Division, and Green Day (which came way earlier) -who
absolutely sounds like The Clash?
CC: Well, music is like history and fashion, it somehow repeats itself but in a different form from where
its actually coming from mainly because of the influences of technology. Just like Electronica, it sprung out
from influences of New Wave, synth Pop, funk and Disco. So with the new bands that are coming out
now who sound like, for example The Clash or Joy Division, I think it's safe to say that the 80's is back!
But then again, no new band/ artist can ever capture or immitate the 80's sound...what do you think?
Klyde: Absolutely! They may have Grunge of the 90's Emo-Rock of the 2000s, but when it comes down to
it, they all come back to where they come from which is New Wave. To me New Wave is a compilation of
thousands of songs, when played together, produces a unique, nostalgic feeling, especially when you listen
to WXB 102.
It's funny how here in the US, high school kids prepare for their Prom months in advance, -to them it's
supposed to be the most unforgettable night of their lives. I'm like -are you kidding me? We had that in the
80's every weekend! The way it went down during the XB days was, you wake up in the morning to listen
to XB, then you ride the jeepney to school and listen to more XB music with them boom-boxes. Then once
you get to school, you talk with your buddies which New Wave concert to go to (The Dawn, Identity
Crisis, etc.) And then when weekend comes, EVERY TOWN... has their own "Prom," -New Wave parties
wherever you go! I don't think anyone could capture that kind of lifestyle ever again. This happened for
five to seven straight years! I'm so glad I lived through the 80's. Thanks to you Cool Carla and the rest of
the original XB jocks, epecially GEORGE FREDERICK (Program Manager/) you're all a big part of it.
